"How can animal welfare science translate into policy for laboratory animal care?”

Dr Larry Carbone is a veterinarian with 40 years of experience caring for animals in laboratories. In addition to his veterinary degree, he holds a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, and veterinary specialist certifications in Animal Welfare (American College of Animal Welfare) and in Laboratory Animal Medicine (American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine).
Dr Carbone left the University of California San Francisco in 2019, and is now a freelance animal welfare scholar, consultant, speaker, and trainer in laboratory animal welfare. He is a visiting Fellow at  the Harvard Law School, where his fellowship project with the Harvard Animal Law and Policy Program examines how animal welfare science can guide needed updates to laboratory animal policies and regulations. He is a published author, with his book What Animals Want: Expertise and Advocacy in Laboratory Animal Welfare published by Oxford University Press.
